Taking part in the World Cup for the first time after choosing not to enter the inaugural competition in 1930 for economic reasons, Germany was placed in a three-team qualifying group alongside Luxembourg and France, with the top two teams qualifying for the finals. After the Luxemburgers had been beaten 9-1 by the Mannschaft and 6-1 by the French, the match between Germany and France became irrelevant and was cancelled with both teams having qualified.
